Exclusive! Totally Crashing the Emmy Stage

Kate Walsh, Wayne Brady

What exactly goes on in the wings backstage at the Emmy Awards? I got a firsthand peek, and this is what I saw:

First of all, it is a crowded space. Very crowded.

The five cohosts were jammed into one corner watching the show on a small flat screen. Last-minute touch-ups happen on the spot, like Ryan Seacrest getting his tie straightened by one of the many minions buzzing about. There's a makeup and hair station for anyone who needs some fixin'.

Presenters get to practice their lines just before going onstage with a miniature teleprompter shoved into another corner. I spotted Kate Walsh doin' a read-through after chatting with Wayne Brady.

And what else? Well...

Party Scoop: Hatin' on L.C., Runnin' With LiLo

Madeline Zima, Lauren Conrad

Bitter, party of one! Californication star Madeline Zima ain't too happy about Lauren Conrad's rise to Emmy presenter.

"I know she's on television, but she's not an actor," Zima sneered about The Hills starlet at TV Guide's post-awards party at the Kress in Hollywood. "That's a little ridiculous, I think. I mean, nothing against her, but...I'm not so down with that."

Let's just hope they didn't run into each other inside the party, where Ms. Conrad was hanging with Hills buddy Lo Bosworth.

Who else was there? Well...

Let Them Eat Cupcakes: Stars Party at Swagtastic Soiree

Brooke Shields

The first celeb to hit the carpet at Entertainment Tonight and People magazine's party, held at the Disney Concert Hall, hadn't seen any of the Emmys.

"I have no idea what's going on," Jonathan Schaech confessed, before adding that he was rooting for his Emmy nominated ex-wife Christina Applegate.

"I've been sending a lot of love and support," he said, in regards to her recent breast cancer diagnosis. "She's doing great. She's a real hero."

Although Christina didn't go home with an award, Jeremy Piven got the statue for the third time. So does this mean his head will get huge?

"His head's not going to get bigger," dished Entourage costar Rex Lee. "If anything, I think this humbled him a little bit."

90210's Ryan Eggold stopped to squash the rumors about Shenae Grimes and Jessica Stroup being too skinny. "I see them eating cheeseburgers all day, every day."

Brooke Shields, clad in Badgley Mischka, also had food on the mind when asked what she was looking forward to at the fete. "Billy Idol, a cupcake and a great gift bag!"

The cupcakes she referred to were set up inside at the Crumbs dessert bar, which proved to be just as popular as the regular dinner buffet featuring Spanish cuisine such as paella. And the gift bag guests got were so heavy, people could barely carry it to their cars!

Neil Patrick Harris hightailed it inside with his beau in tow just in time to see Billy take the stage. Newly single Nicolette Sheridan also arrived fashionably late with a girlfriend.

Paula Abdul seemed to be rekindling things with her restauranteur boyfriend JT Torregiani. Although the two broke up in June, JT and Paula were sharing a table together inside the bash.

Also hanging at the soiree: Emmy winner Jeff Probst, Kristen Chenoweth, John Krasinski, Kathy Griffin and Larry Birkhead.

Backstage Report: Anyone See Tina Fey's Purse?

Tina Fey won three Emmys but lost a purse. Reality TV was embraced on stage but dissed by more than one winner.

America Ferrera, Kate Walsh, Debra Messing

While there were pops of color on the red carpet (hello, Brooke Shields!) it was the intense black outfits on America Ferrera, Debra Messing, Kate Walsh and others that really made an impression.

It was Goth for a grown-up crowd—with lots of ruffles, layers and ruching creating a faintly creepy effect, as if Wednesday Addams had grown up and gone to the Emmys in all her gory glamour.

Or maybe we're taking the funereal-looking frocks a little too seriously? What do you think: Was all the black for the best, or were you also afraid of bustles going bump in the night?

Emmy Carpet Quotes: Disses & Sweatpants

Ricky Gervais

"I think Carell's had his day. I made him what he is. He was nothing before he met me, and how does he repay me? Pretty well, actually. I get half his wages until he's 65."
Ricky Gervais, on giving Steve Carell a career and subsequently profiting from it

“I am definitely more comfortable casually. On the show, sometimes, if I’m sitting behind the reception desk, I just keep my sweatpants on. I don’t even put the skirt on. I just dress the top half of myself.”
Jenna Fischer, despite looking ravishing on the red carpet, on how she'd much rather be dressed down. Sort of like how she is on set, when she's supposedly dressed up

"I am from the South. The higher the hair, the closer to heaven."
Kristin Chenoweth, commenting on her outlandish 'dos when Ryan Seacrest pulled out pictures from her pageant days

"Apparently, allegedly, my ailment was enlarged balls."
—Steve Carell, recounting the excuse he used when he called out sick during the writers' strike

"I just saw Josh Groban on the red carpet. It's got to hurt you that he gets so much more tail than you do."
Kathy Griffin to Seacrest

"He's such a dork, but at the same time, he likes muscle cars and war games and he's kind of a bully and it's like all these different suburban, American traits I grew up with, kind of all in one guy, all in one dude."
Rainn Wilson, explaining why he once said Dwight, his character on The Office, is America

"Mrs. Oh."
Sandra Oh, who brought her mother to the Emmys, after being asked her mom's name by Seacrest

Emmy Trend: Partying With the Parents

Rainn Wilson, Sandra Oh, Sean Combs

Let's face it. When you're a celeb, you probably have your pick of the litter when it comes to nabbing a piece of arm candy for TV's biggest night. Which just makes it all the more admirable when our favorite stars opt out of bringing a here-today, gone-tomorrow date and go with someone who's been there from the very beginning.

This year, several famous faces, often the life of the party, chose as their escorts those who gave them life, including Rainn Wilson, who showed up with dear old dad; Sean "Diddy" Combs, who was accompanied by mom; and Sandra Oh, who was fortunate enough to be flanked by both her folks.

Surprisingly, the person who actually broke his own annual trend of bringing his mother was Jeremy Piven

"My mom clocked out," said the Entourage star, whose mother was a frequent red carpet fixture. "She's sitting at home with a glass of wine."

A glass she no doubt raised in salute to her son when he walked off with the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

Emmy Carpet Quotes: Celeb Slaughterhouse!

Teri Hatcher

A three-way exchange between E!’s Giuliana Rancic, Teri Hatcher and Lisa Edelstein just revealed the ugly side of the Emmys red carpet.

“It’s a little bit too small of a carpet honest,” Hatcher said, adding she was about to "pass out."

“There are too many people getting here.”

“It’s a celebrity cattle drive," Edelstein chimed in, "all to the slaughterhouse.”

Red Carpet Quotes: Kathy vs. Ryan!

Categories: emmys 2008, carpet quotes
Kathy Griffin

Well that was brutal   We're cleaning the residual shrapnel out of our eyeballs after witnessing that odd minibattle between Emmy red carpet host Ryan Seacrest and Kathy Griffin.  "You are the devil," Griffin just told Seacrest on the carpet, adding cryptically, "Why did you call security?"

The talk turned to Emmys. Seacrest congratulated her on her past Emmy win. Griffin retorted that Ryan has no Emmy. Ryan replied that he has a "Daytime one."

"Can that be revoked?" Griffin said. "You're kind of bothering me. You're kind of judging people."

After a bit more of Griffin swinging away and Ryan sallying forth, Griffin ended the interview, calling Seacrest a "man whore."

"That was a lot of work," Seacrest told Rainn Wilson right after the, uh, whatever that was. "You know how she is."

Do not panic. But the Emmys Red Carpet. Is on. Right now. At this moment. Shocker! Even Oprah Takes Swag!

Oprah, Bertolli, Ross Matthews, Ross The Intern, Intern

I'm told Oprah Winfrey hit On3 Productions' AEG Ehrlich Presenters Lounge at the Nokia Theatre yesterday and walked away with LeSportsac's Stella McCartney bowling bag in purple-gray.

Ms. O was also really digging the TrueJeans.com booth, where she was shown how she could find the perfect jean for herself. In short, enter your measurements, body type, style preferences and TrueJeans will sift through its database
